12-year-old girl dies of rare cancer—parents noticed worrying sign as she brushed teeth

Beth Phelps, a 12-year-old girl, was brushing her teeth one evening when her parents noticed a “protruding lump” on her shoulder, visible through her T-shirt. Until that moment, Beth had been a healthy, active girl.

It was discovered 12-year old Beth had a 7cm lesion on her left lung which turned out to be Ewing sarcoma, a rare and deadly kind of cancer.

Sadly, after a doctor’s visit, it was revealed that Beth had a 7cm lesion on her left lung, which was diagnosed as Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Beth began treatment immediately, undergoing surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, after which she was given the all-clear.

However, in June 2022, Beth began experiencing pain in her right shoulder. The pain worsened, and an x-ray revealed that the cancer had returned to her other lung. This time, the prognosis was devastating.

Beth passed away on October 3, 2022.

Before her passing, Beth's parents were presented with an option for a therapeutic study. However, they decided to focus on palliative care to ensure Beth’s remaining time was as comfortable as possible.

Reflecting on the family’s journey, her father, Ben, shared, “Our world was completely turned upside down in an instant. Beth showed no signs of being unwell. She was a healthy little girl.”

He continued, “When we found out about the Ewing sarcoma, we were devastated. Beth took every treatment in stride, even though she was terrified of needles. But when we learned the cancer had returned, we were in shock and heartbroken.”

Ben added, “We had never even heard of Ewing sarcoma before. That’s why I’m now raising as much money as I can—to help find kinder treatments that give more people a chance to survive.”

“Beth continues to be my guiding light and inspiration. This challenge might be physically tough, but it’s nothing compared to what she endured. We miss her every day, and we’re determined to make a difference in her name.”

Now, Ben is taking on a cycling challenge from Land’s End, Cornwall, to John O’Groats, Caithness, Scotland, to raise funds for the Bone Cancer Research Trust (BCRT).
