Homemade Onion and Honey Cough Syrup

A homemade syrup made with onion and honey is a time-tested natural remedy that may help relieve coughs and cold symptoms. Thanks to the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of both ingredients, this simple mixture can be especially useful during the cold and flu season. It helps loosen mucus, soothe throat irritation, and support the immune system.

🧅 Ingredients:

  • 1 to 2 medium onions (white or red, organic if possible)

  • 2 to 4 tablespoons of raw, high-quality honey (manuka or organic is ideal)

  • Optional: juice of 1 lemon, a small clove of garlic, or a few slices of fresh ginger

🛠 Preparation Steps:

  1. Chop the Onion:

    • Peel and finely chop the onions into small cubes or thin slices.

    • The smaller the pieces, the more juice will be extracted during maceration.

  2. Combine with Honey:

    • Place the chopped onion in a clean glass jar.

    • Pour honey over the onion until it’s fully covered.

    • Stir gently to mix the ingredients.

  3. Macerate:

    • Seal the jar and let it sit at room temperature for at least 8 hours or overnight.

    • During this time, the onion will release its juice, creating a syrupy liquid infused with beneficial compounds.

  4. Strain and Store:

    • After maceration, you can strain the mixture using a fine mesh or cheesecloth.

    • Store the syrup in a clean jar or bottle, and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 3–5 days.

🍯 How to Use:

  • Take 1 teaspoon every few hours during the day.

  • You can also mix the syrup into warm (not hot) herbal tea or warm water with lemon.

  • Suitable for adults and children over 1 year old (due to honey content – do not give to babies under 12 months).

🌿 Optional Enhancements:

  • Lemon juice adds vitamin C and enhances the taste.

  • Ginger slices add anti-inflammatory properties and warmth.

  • Garlic is a strong natural antibiotic and can further boost immunity (use only a small amount to avoid overwhelming the taste).

  • For a stronger remedy, simmer the ingredients very lightly for 5 minutes (optional) before letting them rest.

💡 Other Home Uses for Onion Against Cough:

  • Steam inhalation: Add onion slices to a bowl of hot water, cover your head with a towel, and inhale the vapors to relieve nasal congestion.

  • Onion on the nightstand: Some people place half an onion near the bed to help clear the air and reduce nighttime coughing.

  • Onion water: Add chopped onion to a cup of warm water, let it steep for 10 minutes, and drink like a tea.

⚠️ Caution:

  • If symptoms persist longer than 3–5 days or worsen (e.g., fever, chest pain, shortness of breath), consult a doctor.

  • Always use raw honey and avoid over-heating it to preserve its natural enzymes and benefits.
