PURSLANE: SUCCULENT AND HIGHLY NUTRITIOUS

Purslane, a species of plant known as Portulaca oleracea L., is one of the most widely consumed edible succulents in our country, mainly prepared in stews with green tomato sauce, chili, and meat. It grows throughout Mexico.

This herbaceous plant measures on average from 15 to 50 cm in length. It is soft, fleshy, juicy, and has a sour taste. It grows in humid places such as riverbanks or roadsides, and spreads easily, covering large areas. This characteristic gave rise to the popular expression “it spreads like purslane,” used when someone tries to cover too many topics at once.

On the other hand, despite its high productive potential, early growth, hardiness, and efficient use of time and space as a crop in small areas—as well as the long-standing tradition of consuming it as a vegetable among the population of central Mexico—its demand is not proportional to its benefits. However, it is expected that by raising awareness of the great nutritional benefits it provides to our body, its consumption will increase and it will be reincorporated into our diet.
