San Antonio Zoo’s “Cry Me a Cockroach” Fundraiser Lets You Name a Pest After Your Ex
San Antonio, Texas — The San Antonio Zoo is once again offering a unique Valentine’s Day tradition that blends humor, heartbreak, and conservation. The annual “Cry Me a Cockroach” fundraiser invites participants to symbolically name a cockroach, rodent, or even a vegetable after their ex-partner — and then watch it be fed to one of the zoo’s animals.
For a modest donation, supporters can choose from three categories: a cockroach, a rodent, or a vegetable, each representing a different level of symbolic “closure.” Donors receive a digital Valentine’s Day card, while those who contribute at higher levels are also given a personalized video of the animal feeding moment.
A blend of fun and purpose
Zoo officials emphasize that the program is designed to be lighthearted and fun, offering people a playful way to move on from failed relationships. At the same time, it serves an important purpose: raising funds for the zoo’s wildlife conservation and animal care programs.
“It’s all about turning heartbreak into something positive,” a zoo spokesperson said. “Every donation directly supports the animals in our care and global conservation initiatives.”
Growing popularity
The campaign has grown in popularity in recent years, gaining coverage from international media and attracting participants from around the world. Social media has also amplified its reach, with many donors sharing their symbolic acts of revenge — and closure — online.
Supporting conservation through creativity
The San Antonio Zoo continues to use creative fundraising strategies to engage the public, highlighting the importance of conservation while keeping community members entertained.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, zoo officials expect another strong turnout for “Cry Me a Cockroach,” reminding everyone that even a broken heart can help build a better future for wildlife.
