For seven long months, Lancer waited inside the kennels at City of Mobile Animal Services. Despite being one of the sweetest dogs around, not a single person requested a meet-and-greet. “Whenever someone would walk past his kennel, he would stick out his paw in an attempt for someone to hold it,” shared Mary Kate Hale, the shelter’s digital media manager.

Each time footsteps echoed down the hall, Lancer would press his small body against the front of his kennel, squishing himself as close as possible in a silent plea for connection. Lancer wasn’t just sweet—he was full of quirks that made him irresistible once you knew him. “He’s known for his love of peanut butter,” Hale explained. “After a round of zoomies, he can be found napping in a shaded spot with his legs sprawled out like a frog’s.”

“It took less than 24 hours after Lancer’s story was shared on Facebook for him to capture the heart of someone special,” Hale recalled.
