Alberta, Canada — What began as a routine hunting trip turned into a harrowing fight for survival when Jeremy Evans encountered a grizzly bear deep in the woods of Alberta. The attack, which left him with catastrophic injuries, is now remembered as one of the most remarkable survival stories from the Canadian wilderness.

A Routine Hunt Turns Deadly

On August 24, 2017, Evans set out into the forest in search of a bighorn ram. Camouflaged behind trees and scanning the terrain with binoculars, he spotted his target. But alongside the ram, something far larger and far more dangerous appeared—a massive grizzly bear charging directly toward him.

“I knew exactly what it was,” Evans later told Noiser. “I had this feeling I was in trouble. With grizzly bears, if you see cubs, you know the mother is close—and that’s when the real danger comes.”

Within moments, the mother bear was only feet away. “Her paw was stretched straight out, claws extended. I could see the whites of her eyes and her mouth slightly open. She was on a full charge,” Evans recalled.

A Savage Attack

Evans attempted to defend himself, hurling his bike at the bear and scrambling up a tree. But before he could escape, the grizzly seized his leg and dragged him down. The next moments were brutal.

“My left eye was hanging out of the socket,” Evans told the Daily Mail. “My jaw was dislocated, all my teeth exposed. Nothing in my face felt the same.”

The bear eventually retreated, leaving Evans bloodied and broken. He stumbled through the mountainside, even picking up a torn piece of his own scalp from the ground.

Facing Death

Convinced he would not survive, Evans pulled out his firearm to end his suffering—but the gun misfired. “That scared me,” he admitted. “That’s when I decided I was going to try to make it out.”

Believing he might not live long, Evans typed farewell messages to his wife:

  • “Whoever finds this, please let my wife know I tried to make it.”

  • “I am pretty sure this is the end. I am very tired and I feel like I am going to pass out.”

Against All Odds

Defying the odds, Evans managed to reach his vehicle and drove 22 kilometers to find help. He was airlifted to a hospital, where he spent five weeks undergoing five major surgeries and 15 additional procedures. Though he still suffers from limited function in parts of his body, his survival is regarded as nothing short of miraculous.

Today, Jeremy Evans’s story serves as both a chilling reminder of the dangers of the wild and an extraordinary testament to human resilience.
