❗DON’T CONFUSE STROKE WITH SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST – A MISTAKE COULD COST A LIFE!

Today, not only the general public but even some media outlets frequently confuse stroke and sudden cardiac arrest — two completely different medical emergencies. Both are life-threatening, but each requires a different response. Misunderstanding them could cost a patient their only chance at survival.

📌 CLEARLY DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THE TWO CONDITIONS:

🔴 Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)

  • This is when the heart suddenly stops beating, and blood is no longer pumped throughout the body.

  • If CPR (chest compressions) is not performed immediately, the person can die within minutes.

  • Common causes include irregular heart rhythm, heart attack, electric shock, or suffocation.

🧠 Stroke

  • A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or bursts, causing damage to parts of the brain due to lack of blood flow.

  • The heart is still beating, and the person can survive if detected and treated quickly.

  • There are two main types: ischemic stroke (caused by blockage) and hemorrhagic stroke (caused by rupture).

💡 EASY WAY TO REMEMBER:

  • 🧯Sudden Cardiac Arrest = "Power outage in the heart"

  • 💥Stroke = "Blown fuse in the brain"

This comparison makes it easier to understand the mechanism and urgency of each condition.

🆘 WHAT TO DO IF SOMEONE COLLAPSES UNEXPECTEDLY:

👉 Step 1: Check for a carotid pulse (located under the jawline, along the neck)

If a pulse is PRESENT ➡ Likely a STROKE:

  • Do NOT slap, shake, or try to sit the person up.

  • Gently place them in the recovery position (lying on their side).

  • Call emergency services immediately and take them to a hospital with stroke treatment capabilities.

If NO pulse is detected ➡ Sudden Cardiac Arrest:

  • Start CPR immediately: push hard and fast in the center of the chest at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.

  • Shout for help and have someone call emergency services.

  • Every second counts — the longer the delay, the lower the chance of survival.
