Diabetes is a condition that leads to person’s blood sugar levels to become too high. It happens when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin – a hormone that helps the body use glucose for energy and manage blood sugar levels – or the insulin it produces isn’t effective. This is known as type 1 diabetes.

At some individuals insulin may not be produced at all, which is a condition known as type 2 diabetes (T2D)

As per the Cleveland Clinic, over 37 million people in US only suffer from diabetes, which is 1 in 10 people, and around 90% to 95% of them have T2D.

The early signs of diabetes can be minor, which makes it hard to notice them.

However, it’s important to know that early diagnosis leads to better management and prevention.

Skin Tags

Skin tags are harmless growths that can appear on every part of the body, but are mostly found on the underarms, groin, neck, and eyelashes. One of the reasons of their appearance is T2D.

Small Bumps

People diagnosed with diabetes are likely to experience elevated levels of triglyceride, a type of fat that circulates in the bloodstream, which can lead to small bumps on the skin. This condition is known as eruptive xanthomatosis.

Fatigue

Fatigue is a symptom of a wide range of diseases, disorders and deficiencies, including T2D. This is due to the medications, the changes in blood sugar levels, or excessive weight.

Dark Skin Patches

Dark patches on the skin, or acanthosis nigricans, that appear on the armpits, groin, and neck and feel velvety to the touch can be a sign of diabetes or another undiagnosed medical condition.

Feeling Thirsty

One of the most obvious signs of having diabetes is feeling thirsty most of the time and feeling the urge to urinate often. This happens because when the blood sugar rises, the kidneys work harder in order to filter and absorb the excess of glucose. The body then releases this excess through urination, which also pulls other fluids, leading to thirst

Other early symptoms of high blood sugar levels are blurred vision, wounds that take more than usual to heal, weight loss, and tingling and numb skin.

It is of crucial importance to spot any signs on time.
