Tomb of the Unknown Soldier: A Tradition of Eternal Vigil Since 1937
Arlington, Virginia — For nearly nine decades, one of the most solemn traditions in the United States military has carried on without pause. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, located at Arlington National Cemetery, has been guarded every minute of every day since midnight on July 2, 1937 — a symbol of unwavering honor and respect for unidentified service members who made the ultimate sacrifice.
A History of Honor
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was first dedicated in 1921, following World War I, as a resting place for an unidentified American soldier whose identity remains unknown. It quickly became a sacred site of remembrance, drawing countless visitors who sought to pay tribute to all service members lost without recognition.
Initially, the tomb was only guarded during daylight hours. That changed in 1937, when the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment — known as “The Old Guard” — assumed continuous responsibility. Since then, sentinels have stood watch 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, regardless of weather or national crisis.
The Sentinels: Duty Beyond Measure
The soldiers chosen for this role belong to an elite group. Each undergoes rigorous selection and training to uphold the strict traditions associated with the post.
-
Sentinels march 21 steps along a black mat in front of the tomb, symbolizing the 21-gun salute, the highest military honor.
-
They pause for 21 seconds before turning to repeat the walk.
-
The guard is changed with ceremonial precision, drawing silent crowds daily.
These standards are meticulously enforced, reflecting not only military discipline but also deep reverence for the fallen.
An Unbroken Vigil
Neither storms, snow, hurricanes, nor even the attacks of September 11, 2001 have broken this watch. Guards have kept their post through it all, embodying a promise that the unknown will never be forgotten.
This perpetual vigil is more than military ceremony; it is a national pledge that those who sacrificed their identities in service will be remembered with dignity and respect.
A Living Symbol
Today, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier remains one of the most visited sites in Arlington National Cemetery. For veterans, families, and visitors from around the world, the sight of a sentinel pacing solemnly before the tomb serves as a profound reminder: freedom has always carried a price, and some of that price can never be repaid with names or recognition.
As the tradition enters its 88th year of unbroken service, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stands as a timeless symbol of sacrifice — and of a nation’s unshakable commitment to honor its fallen.
