Twin toddlers drown after grandmother with Alzheimer’s leaves door open

In a heartbreaking incident in Oklahoma City, twin toddlers—a boy and a girl—tragically drowned after reportedly leaving their home through a door accidentally left open by their great-grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.

Jenny Callazzo, the mother of 18-month-old twins Locklyn and Loreli, discovered her children unresponsive in the family’s backyard pool, which was filled with murky, algae-covered water. Despite desperate efforts by emergency responders, both toddlers were pronounced dead hours later.

Callazzo is a stay-at-home mother of six and also runs a small boutique. She shares the family home with her husband and her grandmother. Aerial footage of the property captured the neglected state of the pool, which appeared dark green—believed to be caused by a buildup of algae.

Neighbors recall the harrowing moment they saw Jenny in distress in the back of an ambulance, as emergency crews attempted to save her children’s lives.

Just days before the tragedy, the mother had shared a photo of the twins joyfully playing outside, captioned, “Just want to play outside.”

Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the drowning but have ruled out any foul play, according to reports by the Daily Mail.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Callazzo family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral and related expenses. “These beautiful babies were taken from us too soon,” the page reads. “Anything you can give to help with expenses would be greatly appreciated. We are thankful for everyone’s love and support.”

Experts are once again urging parents to take precautions when there are young children in homes with pools. Laura Gamino, injury prevention coordinator for trauma at OU Health, stressed the dangers:
“Children are drawn to water, but toddlers lack the ability to get themselves out. Drowning is quick—and silent.”

She adds, “Many people assume a child in distress will scream or cry, but in reality, they often can’t make a sound because their mouth is full of water. That silence is one of the most frightening aspects.”

Gamino recommends that all pool-owning families install fences at least four feet high, with child-proof locks and handles that are out of reach for little hands.

Our hearts go out to the Callazzo family during this time of unimaginable grief.
