Easy-to-Grow Indoor Plants to Start the New Year

Growing indoor plants not only enhances your living space, strengthens your connection with nature, and promotes relaxation, but it can also bring good feng shui. However, not everyone is familiar with choosing or caring for houseplants.

To help beginners, plant experts Tammy Sons, founder and CEO of TN Nursery, and Tom Knight, editor of OurHouseplants.com, share their top recommendations for easy-care indoor plants:

1. Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen)

If you love the look of peace lilies, try Aglaonema, also known as Chinese evergreen. According to Tom Knight, this plant is ideal for beginners.
"Aglaonema can tolerate low light, withstand occasional drought, and even thrive with minimal attention, making it perfect for any home and any plant owner," he explains.
Today, Aglaonema comes in a variety of leaf colors, allowing you to choose one that best suits your style.

2. Pothos, Snake Plant, and Zanzibar Gem (ZZ Plant)

Tammy Sons highly recommends three foolproof plants for beginners: pothos, snake plant, and Zanzibar gem (ZZ plant).
"These plants can thrive in low-light conditions and require very little watering—perfect for those new to indoor gardening," she says.
Her two essential tips for keeping these plants healthy:

  • Avoid placing them in drafty areas.
  • Ensure they have proper drainage.

3. Marimo Moss Balls – For Those Who Overwater

If you tend to overwater or constantly worry about under-watering your plants, Marimo moss balls are an excellent choice.
"These aquatic plants thrive in a container of water, requiring minimal care. Just keep them away from high temperatures and direct sunlight," Knight advises.

4. Rubber Plant – An Easier Alternative to the Fiddle Leaf Fig

If you love the look of fiddle leaf figs but struggle to care for them, rubber plants are a much easier alternative.
"Rubber plants can grow up to 10 feet tall and have large, glossy, dark green leaves," says Sons.
They also come in a variety of colors, including variegated, deep burgundy, and golden-yellow varieties.

5. Aspidistra (Cast Iron Plant) – Nearly Indestructible

Aspidistra is one of the most low-maintenance indoor plants, making it ideal for beginners.
"It can survive in very low light and go over a month without water," Knight explains.
For best results, place it near a window and water it about once every two weeks.

6. Boston Fern – A Hardy Fern for Beginners

If you love ferns, try the Boston fern.
"This plant requires minimal care and can thrive in low-light conditions," Sons confirms.

With these expert recommendations, even beginners can confidently start the new year with beautiful, thriving indoor plants!
