9 Herbs You Can Grow Indoors All Year Round

Simply placing potted herbs on a windowsill allows you to create a lush indoor garden while adding fresh flavors to your daily meals.

  1. Basil
Basil has a fragrant aroma and a mildly spicy taste, making it a great addition to hot dishes like pho, noodle soups, and salads. It thrives with plenty of water and at least six hours of sunlight. To harvest, you can pinch off leaves or trim branches if the plant has grown tall.
  2. Cilantro (Coriander)
There are two ways to grow cilantro: regrowing it from the base (after using the stems and leaves) or planting seeds. The first harvest is usually ready in about 30 days. For continuous harvesting, pick the outer leaves while leaving the young ones to grow. If you have an abundant harvest, you can chop the cilantro and freeze it with cooking oil or water for later use.

  3. Mint
Mint can be grown from cuttings or seeds and is ready to harvest in about 30 days. To harvest, snip off young stems for salads, tea, or seasoning blends. After trimming, adding fertilizer will help the plant regrow quickly.

  4. Celery
Celery can be grown by regrowing the base after using the stems and leaves, planting seeds, or purchasing seedlings from a store. It thrives in sunny environments. To encourage continuous growth, harvest some of the leaves and stems once the plant reaches a certain height.

  5. Rosemary
The easiest way to grow rosemary indoors is by purchasing a small plant and placing it on a sunny windowsill. Provide adequate sunlight and water for healthy growth. To harvest, trim 4–6 cm (1.5–2.5 inches) of the stem as needed.

  6. Holy Basil
Holy basil can be grown indoors if placed on a south-facing windowsill where it gets at least six to eight hours of sunlight daily. When harvesting, trim the stems but avoid cutting more than half the plant’s height to ensure continued growth.

  7. Chives
The quickest way to grow chives is by using mature plants or separating the bulbs from an existing plant. Chives tolerate drought and warm temperatures but grow faster with proper care. To harvest, trim the leaves while leaving the base (bulbs) intact for regrowth.

  8. Perilla (Shiso)
Perilla requires 6–8 hours of sunlight daily to thrive. It can grow in poor soil conditions but will flourish with proper care. For harvesting, pick the leaves or cut stems—avoiding more than half the plant’s height—to encourage new growth.

  9. Lemongrass
Lemongrass is easy to grow by placing store-bought stalks in water until they develop roots. However, for optimal growth, plant it in soil and place it in a sunny spot.

By growing these herbs indoors, you’ll always have fresh ingredients at hand while enjoying a touch of greenery in your home!
