What began as a joyful family vacation in Pensacola turned into heartbreak when 16-year-old Bryce Brooks of Atlanta lost his life while saving four younger children from a dangerous current.

A Heroic Act

Bryce was on the beach with friends when they spotted several children caught in a rip current. Without hesitation, Bryce and two of his friends plunged into the water while others ran to alert nearby adults.

“Our son Bryce, while being pulled by currents himself, literally called for help—not for himself, but for the little kids he was looking out for,” his father, Shivy Brooks, told reporters.

As Bryce struggled, family friend Charles “Uncle Chuck” Johnson II dove in to help but was also pulled under. Strangers eventually pulled both from the water, and they were airlifted to the hospital, but tragically neither survived.

A Family and Community in Mourning

“Our family is devastated. Our community is devastated,” Shivy said.

At Maynard Jackson High School, classmates and neighbors honored Bryce with a balloon release ceremony, celebrating his bravery and selflessness. His mother, Crystal Brooks, expressed both grief and pride:

“We’re never gonna get to see Bryce grow up to be the full man he was going to be. But we know that he stepped into his manhood to save these children, and that makes me proud.”

Bryce was remembered as an honor roll student, a music lover, a member of his school’s fashion club, and a devoted older brother. His family had also been featured on Netflix’s Instant Dream Home, where their Atlanta house was renovated.

Legacy Through Action

To honor Bryce’s sacrifice, the Brooks family launched the Bryce Brooks Foundation, dedicated to water safety and drowning prevention. Its mission includes providing free swimming lessons for children and adults, and scholarships for teens to become lifeguard-certified.

The foundation has already awarded its first six scholarships to support college expenses—including one to Uncle Chuck’s son, ensuring that the legacy of both heroes lives on.

Community members have also rallied behind the family. A fundraiser organized by Get Your Teach On has raised more than $78,000 to help them through their grief.

Bryce’s story is one of courage, sacrifice, and love. Though his life was cut short, his actions saved lives, and his legacy continues through the foundation that bears his name.
